This Years Class of Athletes and Teams includes:

  • TEAM Category: The 1974 & 1975 Poplar Indians State Championship Team

    • Dana Kirn, Ken "Ouie" Smoker, Jr., Albert "Goochie" Kirn, Tom Granbois, Nick Cain, Emery "Jumbo" Red Eagle, Karl Reddies, Manny "Frybread" Granbois , Mike Kirn, Dave Anderson, Harlen Riediger, Jay Cummins and Coach Larry Ferguson.

  • Allen Arthur “Arsh” Stiffarm: The 6'5” Center for the Browning Indians averaged 25 points a game as a senior in Browning's title run in 1972-1973. He also averaged 12.6 rebounds a game and led Browning to a 2nd place finish that year. He went onto play at Northern Montana College. He shined throughout Indian Country where he also played on the 1975 Indian Nationals Championship Team. He was one of the happiest guys you would ever meet and you never seen him without a smile.

  • John Matte: Graduated from Missoula Co. High School and was All-State two years in a row. John played in the East-West Shrine Game and was a Smith and Street All-American. Went on to play football for the University of Montana Grizzlies as well as star in the Rodeo Circuit.

  • Walter “Blackie” Wetzel: Played in Browning and Shelby and went on to the University of Montana where he played football, track, and boxing. Known for his ability to jump, he leaped 22 ft. 3 inches in the long jump at the U of M. He also was known for knocking out George Montgomery's tooth in a boxing match. George at 6'2” realized early that he messed with the wrong 5' 10” Blackfeet. Blackie was selected as an Outstanding Alumnus to the University of Montana.

  • Jonathan Takes Enemy: Hardin's outstanding play maker and scorer! Played in one of the most prolific games in Montana history losing to Livingston and those tough Ferch boys. Shann Ferch and Jonathan put on the best scoring game of two guards in Montana history. Each hitting in the 40 point plus range. Played at Rocky Mountain College and was featured in Sports Illustrated.

  • Jess “Tootie” Wetzel: Played basketball at Browning High School and Western Montana College where he was inducted in the Hall of Fame. Western Coach Straugh stated, “Jess changed the game of basketball!”

  • Clifford Foote: State champion runner. Played for St. Labre Braves Championship basketball team in 1966.

  • Leo “Beaver” Bird: Led Cut Bank to a State Title in 1957 in basketball and was a great Rodeo Performer. He was the first of a long list of excellent Rodeoers from the Bird family.

  • TEAM Category: 1975 National Indian Activities Association Basketball Champs, the Browning All-Stars
